TWO apple trees have been planted in the garden of the Sacred Heart Hospital in Carlow, marking the occurrence of Earth Day.

Residents and staff at the Sacred Heart were delighted to be joined at a ceremony to mark the occasion by cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council cllr Andrea Dalton.

The trees were donated by Colm O’Brien in memory of his mother Kathleen and by Topline Doyle’s. They were planted respectively by residents Ann Flynn, her husband Tom Flynn and Jim McAssey.

Welcoming everyone to Sacred Heart for the occasion, director of nursing Jenny Dowling Director said they were “delighted” to have guests with them to mark Earth Day, including family of residents for a ceremony that was followed by some refreshments in the day room of the hospital.

Ms Dowling said: “It’s a chance for all of us to celebrate our planet, to raise awareness about environmental conservation and to encourage action for a healthier and more sustainable future.”

Also speaking at the ceremony was activities co-ordinator in the Sacred Heart, Deirdre Hilliard, who explained that the hospital garden is an “important feature of life for residents”, as is their ongoing activities programme.

“We were looking forward to the occasion and we would like to extend our thanks to those who donated the trees and who came along to share Earth Day with us.

“It’s very much in the spirit of the Earth Day message, in that together we can make a meaningful impact and create a more sustainable world.”

Sacred Heart Hospital is a 63-bed residential care centre facility, with accommodation arranged in three interconnecting units – the Sacred Heart, St Clare’s and St James’s units.
