Carlow Nationalist — Public meeting on back to education and apprenticeships

A PUBLIC meeting focusing on apprenticeships, the CAO and returning to education will take place Tuesday night at 7pm in the Seven Oaks Hotel.

Cllr Fintan Phelan will host the public meeting ‘Apprenticeships, CAO, back to education and beyond’, welcoming three prominent guest speakers – deputy Niall Collins, minister of state with responsibility for skills and further education; former education minister Mary Hanafin and Brian Mooney, Ireland’s leading career guidance counsellor and Irish Times education analyst.

“Following on from my successful consultation with young people across our county, I found that there is a need for information events on career options,” said cllr Phelan.

“This one-stop-shop is a unique opportunity to hear from key people and experts on apprenticeships, CAO options and back-to-education advice. I am delighted that we will be joined by minster Niall Collins, who has responsibility for apprenticeships in government, along with Mary Hanafin, who brings a wealth of experience as a teacher and former minister for education and Brian Mooney, whose career guidance advice is highly sought after.”

This meeting is open to all and it would be of particular interest to students in fourth, fifth and sixth year, their teachers and parents.

“I am also delighted to announce that we will have our new university SETU and Carlow College there on the evening with information stands, where you can find out more about various course options that they offer,” said cllr Phelan.

Commenting on the fact that Mr Mooney has been asked to do a piece of work on retirement planning for older people, cllr Phelan said: “There is something for everyone at this meeting; not only will it look at apprenticeships and CAO options but Brian’s work around retirement planning will be very interesting”.

“I would like to encourage everyone to attend this informative event, in particular students, parents and teachers,” concluded cllr Phelan.
