Carlow Nationalist — Green light for women’s refuge in Carlow

PLANS to develop a domestic violence refuge centre in Carlow have been confirmed this week.

Dr Stephanie O’Keeffe, CEO of the domestic, sexual and gender-based violence agency Cuan, told deputy Murnane O’Connor, in response to a parliamentary question, that the organisation has “very active engagement with Carlow County Council and the identified domestic violence service provider to progress plans for the development of a refuge in Co Carlow”.

“A refuge containing eight family units of accommodation is planned for the county,” said Dr O’Keeffe.

“Additional supports have been allocated to the service provider to further build their capacity to undertake the operation of a refuge facility inclusive of ancillary services.”

Deputy Murnane O’Connor said: “I’m pleased to receive confirmation from Cuan that progress is being made on the development of a refuge centre for those suffering domestic, sexual and gender-based violence in Carlow.

“This facility is much needed for Carlow. There will be eight family units that will help victims of domestic abuse. This is long overdue; victims of domestic violence in our locality have been waiting too long for this centre.”
