The longstanding rift between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Oscar de la Hoya escalated dramatically, nearly resulting in a physical altercation, following a heated exchange at a press conference. The feud, rooted in Alvarez’s departure from Golden Boy Promotions, reached a boiling point as both parties engaged in a verbal confrontation.

Alvarez, the reigning super middleweight champion, has long severed ties with De la Hoya’s promotional company, Golden Boy Promotions, a move that has fueled animosity between the two figures. With Alvarez scheduled to face Jaime Munguia on May 4 in Las Vegas as part of the Cinco de Mayo festivities, tensions were already running high due to Munguia’s affiliation with De la Hoya’s camp.

Alvarez’s Former Promoter Put Him On Blast

During the press conference, De la Hoya seized the opportunity to address Alvarez’s past failed drug test and public jabs. Delivering a prepared speech in English, De la Hoya launched into a tirade aimed at Alvarez, highlighting the Mexican boxer’s alleged disparaging remarks over the years.

De La Hoya contrasted Jaime Munguía calling out Triple G at just 21 while noting that Alvarez failed a drug test leading up to their rematch.

Alvarez, clearly agitated by De la Hoya’s words, responded vehemently in Spanish, hurling expletives and derogatory remarks at his former promoter. The exchange quickly escalated, with both men visibly incensed and on the brink of physical confrontation.

Canelo Alvarez Tested Positive For Clenbutorol

The Failed Test Overshadowed His Controversial Victory Against Triple G

On March 5, 2018, Álvarez faced a setback when he tested positive for clenbuterol, a banned substance, in preparation for his rematch against Golovkin, following their controversial draw in their initial bout. Consequently, Álvarez officially withdrew from the anticipated rematch.

Golden Boy Promotions, Álvarez’s promoter, hinted during a press conference that the likelihood of Álvarez being cleared at the hearing was slim, and they expressed concerns about the insufficient time to adequately promote the fight.

Subsequently, Álvarez faced a six-month suspension following the hearing, which was backdated to his initial drug test failure on February 17. This suspension effectively concluded on August 17, 2018. Alvarez won the rematch but many viewers felt Golovkin beat him as with the first fight.
