Cameron McCarthy dead news 2024, former AFL player with Fremantle Dockers and GWS Giants

UPDATED: The AFL world is in shock and mourning after news broke of the death of 29-year-old former Fremantle and Greater Western Sydney player Cameron McCarthy.

Western Australia police on Friday confirmed the death, with the Dockers and Giants releasing statements soon afterwards.

”About 6:15pm yesterday, Thursday 9 May 2024, emergency services were called to an address in Lake Coogee,” police said.

“Upon arrival, it was confirmed a 29-year-old male was deceased.

“The death is being treated as non-suspicious. A report will be prepared for the coroner.”

McCarthy was drafted with pick 14 in 2013 and played 21 games for the Giants in Sydney, but requested a trade home to Perth due to homesickness.

He was granted the trade and joined Fremantle at the end of 2016.

McCarthy was the club’s leading goal kicker in 2017 and played 49 games for the Dockers in total before being cut at the end of 2020.

Midway through the 2020 season McCarthy collapsed at training, and was later diagnosed with epilepsy.

“On behalf of everyone at the Fremantle Football Club, we extend our deepest sympathies to Cam’s family at this unimaginably difficult time,” Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick said.

“Cam came to the club from Greater Western Sydney in 2016 and played 49 games for Fremantle after initially being drafted from South Fremantle.

“His death is tragic, and to all of his family, friends and teammates, we extend our deepest condolences.

“Cam was a kind and easy-going person at the club, and he was someone who had a habit of making people smile and laugh. His talent was undeniable and he loved his footy.

“Our thoughts are with Cam’s family and his loved ones during this time.”

The Dockers will reportedly wear black armbands during Friday night’s game against the Swans at Optus Stadium.

South Fremantle, McCarthy’s junior club, added: “Cam is remembered as not just a prodigious football talent but as a popular, compassionate and caring person who had time for everyone at our club,” South Fremantle said in a statement.

“He will be dearly missed.”

The Giants, meanwhile, said McCarthy had made a huge impact after being drafted, describing his “great energy” around the club.

“We are saddened to learn of Cam’s passing. The news has had a profound impact on many current and former GIANTS players and staff,” said club CEO David Matthews.

“Cam had great energy and was a much-loved member of our club for the seasons he was here. He was very popular and a bright footballing talent.

“On behalf of the GIANTS, we extend our deepest sympathies to the entire McCarthy family and his many friends.”

The AFL Players Association also released a statement, saying it was “a terribly sad time” for the code.

“All at the AFLPA extend our deepest sympathies to Cam’s family, friends and all of the people who worked and played alongside him at the GWS Giants and Fremantle,” AFL CEO Paul Marsh said.
