Brit Olympic runner slapped with a driving ban — after he’s caught speeding

BRITISH athletics favourite Kriss Akabusi was handed a road ban after being caught speeding.

The former Olympian, 65, did 47mph in a 30mph zone and already had nine points on his licence.

He tried to fight a disqualification by claiming “exceptional hardship”.

But JPs in Southampton barred him from the road for six months for the incident last April on the Isle of Wight.

He was also ordered to pay £1,036 – comprised of a £660 fine, £110 in legal costs, and £266 in a victim surcharge fee.

However, Akabusi has lodged an appeal against the ban — meaning it has been suspended until a crown court hearing to be held later.

Akabusi won silver at the 1992 Barcelona Games for the 4x400m relay and the 400m hurdles, for which he still holds the British record.

He later presented TV shows including the BBC’s Record Breakers.

In an interview in 2013 published in the Northern Echo, Akabusi told of his love of fast cars.

He told the publication: “I get my boy racer moments, but, actually, I am quite sedate.

“I enjoy driving, I do 50,000 miles a year, most of it on the motorway. I don’t want to get myself in trouble, but I can get to places fast.”

He also told the publication that when he was around 19 or 20 he raced two of his friends home from a nightclub in his Opel GTJ and floored it over a crossroads which had a camber and his car left the ground.
