Borrell assures that Putin is an “existential threat” and that “if he is successful in Ukraine he will not stop there”

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrellhas assured that the Russian president, Vladimir Putinrepresents “an existential threat” and that the majority of the European Council considers that Russia is right now the main threat that Europe faces.

“Today, Putin is an existential threat for all of us,” Borrell said during a speech at the University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom. “If Putin succeeds in Ukrainewill not stop there,” he added before warning about “the prospect of having a puppet government in kyiv like that of Belarus, with Russian troops on the Polish border, and Russia controlling 44% of the world cereal market.”

“It’s something that Europeans should be aware“, noted the top European diplomat before speaking about Russia as “the greatest existential threat to Europe”, an assessment shared by “the majority of the European Council.”

Borrell acknowledged, however, that Russia continues to have allies within the council of leaders of the EU. “There are not many, but there are some,” admitted the diplomat. “In a Union governed by unanimity, our policies towards Russia are always threatened by a single veto – one is enough – as demonstrated by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán by delaying our latest aid package to Ukraine,” he added. he.

Returning to the Russian president, Borrell has estimated that “Putin sees the entire West as an adversary” and his forces “act accordingly through disinformation” and an “important factory of lies” that Moscow uses to “interfere in our democratic processes, as they have already done and will do – I am sure – in the next European elections.”

“Ukrainian existence depends on us,” added Borrell, who insisted on the need to continue providing war material to Ukraine. “It could end the war in Ukraine in a couple of weeks, simply by cutting off the supply. Ukraine will not be able to resist, it will have to surrender and the war will end,” the diplomat estimated.

“I don’t want that formula, and I hope that many Europeans don’t want it either,” he added. “On the contrary, we will do everything we can to provide Ukrainians with military and political support“, it is finished.
