Andy Cohen has some ideas for the hit Sex and the City spinoff And Just Like That, which is set to feature Rosie O’Donnell in its upcoming third season.
On Wednesday night’s (May 8) episode of Watch What Happens Live, Cohen revealed what he jokingly suggested to his BFF Sarah Jessica Parker, who famously plays Carrie Bradshaw in both Sex and the City and the Max reboot.
“I joked on the red carpet that [O’Donnell] was taking over the role of Che Diaz,” he said. “SJ laughed.”
While details about O’Donnell’s character have not yet been announced, the actress did tease a photo of a script for Season 3, Episode 1, which revealed that she will be playing someone named Mary.
The infamous Che Diaz (played by Sara Ramirez) was the nonbinary standup comedian whom Miranda Hobbes (Cynthia Nixon) left her husband for. The character initially annoyed fans of the series, though Che began to grow on people when they had their own storyline in Season 2.
“Other people’s opinions of a character — that’s not something I can allow into my process,” Ramirez told Variety in June 2022. “I choose what I receive, right? That’s the beauty of being grown — I don’t have to receive everything!”
With Che and Miranda breaking up at the end of the show’s second season, multiple sources confirmed to Variety that Ramirez will not be back for the third installment.
Ramirez previously suggested they had been fired from the show for their outspoken support of Palestine amid the Israel-Hamas war, writing on Instagram, “It’s wild how performative so many in Hollywood are. Even more performative than the last character I played,” seemingly referring to their role as Che.
However, sources close to production told The Daily Mail that Ramirez had not been axed for their support of Palestine and a ceasefire, but rather because “Che brought nothing to the show anymore. They were on the chopping block since last season.”
And Just Like That Season 3 is slated to premiere in 2025.
