AEW Planning On Releasing Past Shows On Demand, Per Tony Khan

There will come a time when we can watch all past AEW shows in one place.

Highlights

  • Tony Khan has confirmed plans to try and get all past AEW content streaming in one place.
  • Media rights deals are ongoing with the fifth anniversary of Dynamite approaching.
  • The most likely landing spot for an AEW library is Max since it’s owned by Warners Bros. Discovery.

Tony Khan fielded questions this week during the customary pre-PPV press conference ahead of AEW Dynasty this weekend. Like every other AEW PPV so far, Dynasty will be available on B/R Live and Fite TV, but the rumblings of ongoing rights and streaming deals prompted questions about what AEW’s future might look like in the near future. Khan confirmed ongoing talks with Warner Bros. Discovery in that regard as well as plans to get everything that has happened in AEW so far streaming in one place.

Discussing the hundreds of episodes of TV AEW has already aired, as well as the fifth anniversary of the promotion’s relationship with Turner approaching, Khan confirmed that he expects past AEW content to be available to stream in one convenient spot to be a part of the company’s next rights deal (H/T to PWInsider for the transcription).

The whole library has never been in one place together. There’s no place to really go back and watch all these Dynamites and all these great events. So, an archive library and a place to put streaming events, it’s a really interesting idea… It’s something that I expect to happen in our next media rights deal.

Khan did sign off by clarifying that nothing has been decided yet, and this is simply what he hopes to happen, potentially as early as 2025. Everything AEW has done so far residing on a streaming service somewhere is likely what’s getting the most attention during negotiations alongside the status of live PPVs. The AEW boss noted that where the promotion’s shows live from 2025 is yet to be determined.

Although still a young company, AEW already has hundreds of hours of content that are largely inaccessible right now. Comfortably more than 1,000 hours if you include the now defunct YouTube shows like AEW Dark. Having somewhere fans can go back and watch their favorite moments from AEW’s past is key to building its future. Getting that content, and potentially live PPVs, on a platform people are already subscribed to would also help AEW pull in new fans.

The most likely landing spot for AEW’s library will be Max since that’s Warner Bros. Discovery’s streaming service. A very big deal if AEW can get on there, especially with WWE heading to Netflix in 2025. WWE announced the blockbuster deal earlier this year, confirming Raw will air live on Netflix in the US starting in January. Fans outside of the US will be getting an even better deal as all WWE programming will be moving from the Network to Netflix.
