Highlights

  • Ronda Rousey is writing her own biopic script for Netflix, based on her memoirs, My Fight/Your Fight and Our Fight, with her sister.
  • Rousey fought hard to be the one to write the script herself, despite initial plans for a professional screenwriter like Mark Bomback.
  • Paramount lost the rights to the Rousey biopic in 2015, and now Netflix is producing it, showcasing her journey from MMA to WWE to Hollywood.

Former UFC and WWE Champion Ronda Rousey has written two memoirs, My Fight/Your Fight, and this year’s controversial, Our Fight, which TheSportster reviewed. Her latest book made headlines for its scathing comments about her time in WWE, including her thoughts on Vince McMahon and the women’s division. Whether you love her or hate her, Ronda Rousey is a major pop culture star who brought a lot of attention and fans to both mixed martial arts and professional wrestling. Now, she’s getting her own feature film about her life.

Deadline reports:

“Sources tell Deadline that Rousey has closed a deal to adapt the script for her own biopic at Netflix. It would be based on both her memoirs,
My Fight/Your Fight
and
Our Fight,
which she co-wrote with her sister, Maria Burns Ortiz. While their deal isn’t closed, sources say Chernin Entertainment is expected to produce.”

While Ronda Rousey has lived a fascinating life of ups and downs worthy of a big Hollywood movie, what’s just as interesting is that a professional screenwriter isn’t being brought in, but Rousey and her sister will write it themselves. Deadline called that situation unique, saying that she fought hard to write the script herself.

According to Deadline, a feature film about Ronda Rousey’s life was fist tried in 2015 when Paramount bought the rights to her first memoir, My Fight/Your Fight. Paramount lost the rights after regime changes, and when they lapsed, Netflix was there to snatch them up due to Netflix exec Michelle Evans being a fan of Rousey. This is for the best, as so much has happened to Rousey since 2015, including her shocking loss to Holly Holm in the UFC and her career in WWE.

When the film rights were at Paramount, professional screenwriter Mark Bomback was set to pen the script, but Rousey fought to be the one to do so with Netflix. Rousey worked hard to learn how to write screenplays, working with WME’s Adam Novak, who has worked at the agency for 33 years. He sent her 30-40 scripts to cover, which taught her about structure and technique. Rousey was said to be so good at screenwriting that she wrote the script in just one week. When meeting with Netflix, the first page of the script was actually removed so that they wouldn’t know it was Ronda Rousey herself who had written it. Deadline also reported that:

“While the project was initially conceived as something she would also star in when it was at Paramount, sources now say she only plans to write the film, with meetings with potential candidates to play Rousey expected to begin in the months to come.”

Ronda Rousey has been a success in MMA and professional wrestling. Now she’s conquering the world of screenwriting.
