Highlights

  • McGregor never defended titles, always aiming for the next big thing.
  • He aims to become the first triple division champ in UFC history.
  • McGregor seeks a BMF belt fight with Holloway, may face Diaz in a trilogy.

Conor McGregor has enjoyed a ton of success in his combat sports career – but when he isn’t competing in the UFC anymore he will likely leave his legacy with quite a few unchecked boxes.

Conor McGregor’s Proposed Rule Change for UFC 303 Bout Get Rejected By Michael Chandler

Michael Chandler questions Conor McGregor’s readiness after he proposed a rule change to their long awaited fight.

That’s not a knock on the Irishman, as it’s tough to sustain success in the sport. But not everyone can say they have won multiple titles in the UFC and made even close to the amount of money he’s raked in.

Never Even Attempted Once

  • McGregor has won multiple titles.
  • He always looks ahead to the next big challenge.

McGregor has won multiple championships – but he never chose to defend the belt even once. The Dublin native has always looked at the next big thing, whether that was setting his sights on the next weight class or a huge money fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in boxing.

6 Conor McGregor Is Yet To Become A Triple Division Champion

A Win Against Chandler Could Lead to a Historic Fight

Conor McGregor holds up two UFC belts

  • This has never been accomplished in UFC history.
  • McGregor is one of the few double champions in the sport.

Nobody has ever accomplished this since the company was first founded in 1993. But if anybody is going to do it, you would have to put McGregor at the top of the list. The 35-year-old is one of the few fighters in the UFC that has held two belts in different weight classes simultaneously. It won’t be easy – but if McGregor can pull out a win against Michael Chandler this summer at 170 pounds, that will tell you he can compete at a high level still. Perhaps, that will eventually earn him a title shot for the Welterweight title to make history.

5 McGregor Hasn’t Captured The BMF Belt

Holloway Could be Next

  • If McGregor beats Chandler, a BMF fight might be on the table.
  • Holloway said a fight against McGregor would be huge.

Max Holloway has been a hot commodity in the MMA world after his impressive last-second knockout win against Justin Gaethje for the BMF (baddest mother f**ker) belt. Next, the Hawaiian might want a piece of McGregor.

The UFC middleweight division has had many champions but not all are created equal.

“It would be hard not to say with him finally getting announced that he’s actually fighting, Conor [McGregor] 2,” Holloway told KHON’s Rob DeMello in Hawaii. “That’s the hugest fight, I think.”

Now, just imagine if McGregor beats Chandler. The UFC is going to be salivating over a potential bout with Holloway for the BMF belt. That’s a fight that could potentially be the most hyped-matched in UFC history, given the two names and what would be at stake.

  • McGregor lost to the unbeaten Khabib Nurmagomedov.
  • The Irishman has beaten legends from Holloway to Jose Aldo.

McGregor has beaten some impressive legends in the sport, from Holloway to Jose Aldo. But The Notorious hasn’t been able to beat somebody that entered the cage against him unbeaten. McGregor had his chance against Khabib Nurmagomedov – but the Russian’s Dagestanian wrestling proved to be too much for him. But at least he was able to win a round, something that only one other fighter (Justin Gaethje) was able to do.

3 Win or Complete Any Trilogy

A Third Match With Diaz Could Happen

  • Dustin Poirier won the third fight against McGregor after a doctor’s stoppage.
  • Diaz said a trilogy fight with McGregor will definitely happen at some point.

Fans have been begging for a third fight to happen with Nate Diaz – and they can only hope it will at some point. The first match was accepted on short notice by Nate Diaz – but the Stockton, California native pulled off an upset win after stunning him in the second round on the feet and scoring a submission on the ground. McGregor would get a rematch that was a bloodbath – but the Irishman pulled it out narrowly by majority decision. McGregor had a trilogy with Dustin Poirier – but he lost the fight after a horrific leg injury that resulted in a doctor’s stoppage. But McGregor may get another shot.

“I 100 percent guarantee I’m going to fight Conor McGregor again,” Diaz told MMA Junkie.

2 Never Won by Submission in UFC

McGregor Enjoys Knocking Out Opponents

  • McGregor is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt.
  • The Notorious’ last win via submission was in Cage Warriors 47 – about 12 years ago.

Interestingly, McGregor is a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. However, you wouldn’t know it because he hasn’t really shown off his grappling in the UFC. He likes to keep things on his feet and knock out opponents. Never has McGregor in the UFC earned a victory via submission. The Notorious’ last win by submission in MMA occurred at Cage Warriors 47, in June 2012.

1 McGreogr Doesn’t Hold Any Division Records

Long Layoffs And Sights Set on Multiple Divisions

McGregor vs Alvarez

  • McGregor ranks second all-time in Featherweight history with six knockouts.
  • The Notorious has fought in multiple divisions, including Lightweight, Featherweight, and Welterweight.

Throughout his career, McGregor has been known as a knockout artist. However, he does not hold any records by weight class, including knockouts or finishes, according to the UFC. Big reasons why include long layoffs and fighting in multiple divisions, such as Lightweight, Featherweight, and Welterweight. In 145-pound history, McGregor is tied for second all-time in knockouts with six – just behind Holloway.
