Letran stops Benilde’s unbeaten run; Baste loses 3 straight

MANILA, Philippines—College of St. Benilde’s four-game win streak in the NCAA Season 100 men’s basketball tournament came to a screeching halt on Sunday at San Juan Arena.

The Blazers were unable to move past their Season 98 tormentor Letran, 71-69, but they remained as the league’s top seed with a 4-1 record.

Deo Cuajao posted 20 points built on five buckets from beyond the arc for Letran. Rookie Sherick Estrada played an all-around game of 17 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block to power the Knights to a 3-2 card.

Meanwhile, Tony Ynot registered 15 points while Allen Liwag tallied a double-double of 12 points and 15 rebounds for the Blazers but to no avail.

In the first game, Arellano finally broke through the win column following an 87-73 win over a struggling San Sebastian side.

Jaedan Ongotan exploded with a timely 21-point outburst to finally push the Chiefs to their first season win. Lorenz Capulong tallied a double-double to the tune of 12 points and 10 rebounds to halt Arellano’s four-game losing skid.

Ameer Aguilar top scored for the Stags with 14 points but that wasn’t enough to stop San Sebastian from sliding down a three-game losing slope. Harold Ricio and Rafael Are scored 11 each to their names but the Stags still fell to a 2-3 card.

The Stags look to return to the win column on Tuesday as they face the surging Perpetual Help Altas, which has the services of star rookie Mark Gojo Cruz.
