Andorra la VellaAgents of the Civil Guard of La Seu d’Urgell ha arrested in Bellver de Cerdanya two men, aged 23 and 32 and of Romanian nationalityas alleged authors of a copper theft. According to the Ministry of the Interior and collected by Radio Seuthose arrested were surprised at a checkpoint at the foot of the N-260 roadat the main entrance of the town of Cerdana, when they were carrying more than 400 kilos of telephone wire cable in the trunk and did not have any document to prove where they had obtained it.
Last Sunday at 7 p.m., members of the Fiscal and Borders Section of the Headquarters had set up a vehicle verification point in Bellver. At that moment they noticed that one of the cars coming towards them was trying to turn around and, if they were detected, to run away. Then a pursuit was started which allowed them to prevent their escape. The two occupants were then ordered to get out of the vehicle, a Renault Laguna with Spanish registration, and an inspection of the car began
The officers observed that there was one in the back of the car a blanket that covered a large amount of copper telephone cableswhich were rolled up. Cables of the same material were also found in the trunk. It was calculated that there were up to 407 kilos of copper wireof different weights and volumes, valued at around 2,400 euros. When the occupants were questioned about the origin of the cables, neither could prove that they had acquired it legally, so they were arrested for the alleged crime of copper theft.
Several copper thefts have been reported in recent days
The two men were taken to police headquarters in La Seu d’Urgell, where, after conducting the necessary proceedings, they have been brought before the Court of Inquiry No. 1 in the Urgellan capital. The gender involved has been made available to the same court, while the Civil Guard continues the procedures to clarify the facts and the provenance of the material. In this sense, in recent days, notices had been received of several thefts of copper cable in Alt Urgell and Cerdanya.
