“There are headwinds for the democratic rulers of the world and the US is not immune”

The former president Barack Obama (2009-2017) regretted this Wednesday that in recent years conditions have arisen that have created “headwinds for democratic rulers around the world”and has pointed out that the results of Tuesday’s elections showed that “the United States is not immune to them.”

“These problems have a solution, but only if we listen to each other and respect the constitutional principles and democratic norms that have made this country great,” he said in a statement published on his social networks shortly after the vice president, Kamala. Harris, to appear at Howard University in Washington, after accepting his defeat.

Obama has pointed out the pandemic, the rise in prices and the feeling “that many people have that, no matter how hard they work, the best they can do is stay afloat” as some of the global problems causing these headwinds.

The former president, who has played an important role in Harris’ campaign, has said he is very proud of the candidate as well as his running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and thanked all the staff who had worked to get Harris into the White House.

“It is not the result we expected given our deep disagreements with the Republican candidacy on a whole series of issues, but Living in a democracy is about recognizing that our point of view will not always win“, he stated after congratulating former President Donald Trump on his victory.

According to Obama, progress requires “good faith and grace” even with those with whom one disagrees. “This is how we got here and this is how we will continue to build a more just and equitable, more equal and freer country,” he concluded.

The Obamas’ relationship with Harris

During the end of this campaign, both he and his wife, Michelle, have had leading roles in some of the rallies held in key states.

The relationship between Harris and Obama go back 20 yearswhen she served as district attorney in San Francisco and helped organize a fundraiser for Obama’s then-Senate campaign.

The vice president was also one of the first to support Obama in his 2008 presidential race and participated as a volunteer in his campaign in Iowa.
