Andorra la Vella“On December 9, Salvador Illa will receive Xavier Espot, Andorran Prime Minister, in the Palace of the Generalitat. The Government of Espot has announced a regulation of language persecution for those businesses that serve customers in Spanish or other languages, and not in Catalan, with penalties that can reach up to 10,000 euros. Despite this hispanophobic policy, the leader of the PSC is pampering his relations with Andorra very much”.
This is the first paragraph of the news about Andorra from one of the media related to the Spanish far-right. The attack against the Andorran Government, which they accuse, continues “hispanophobia” due to the new legislation that foresees fines for those who do not serve in Catalan when this is the language used by the customer. One of the targets of the attacks is the Minister of Culture Mònica Bonell who “it is precisely the policy that publicly announced language fines to eradicate Spanish as the language of use in Andorran businesses”.
Attack on the Generalitat
The far-right media are using the issue of public attention in Catalan in Andorra to criticize the Government of the Generalitat. They accuse Salvador Illa of “reward” the Andorran executive due to the fact that, according to these media, Spanish is being persecuted in the Principality.
In the attacks, mention is made not only of the meeting between Xavier Espot and Salvador Illa on December 9, but of any contact between members of the two executives. “On October 17, Illa sent her Government delegate in Madrid – and vice-president of the PSC -, Núria MarÃn, to meet with the Andorran ambassador in Spain, in a meeting held at the Delegation of the Generalitat. In addition, on September 21 Illa met in La Seu d’Urgell with Xavier Espot during the episcopal ordination of the coadjutor bishop of Urgell, Josep-LluÃs Serrano”.
