Andorra la VellaThe Alternative for Germany (AfD), a far-right party, has presented a draft of its electoral program for the 2025 elections with proposals that include Germany’s exit from the European Union (EU), the return to a national currency, and the abandonment of the Paris Agreement on climate. All in all, at a time when Andorra is negotiating its Association Agreement with the EU, a pact that aims to bring the Principality closer to the European internal market while respecting its specificities.
AfD proposals
The AfD promotes what they have called “Dexit”, the exit of Germany from the EU, replacing it with a “Europe of the fatherlands”. This initiative includes:
- A common market with strengthened borders against illegal immigration.
- A referendum on remaining in the EU.
- A return to the German mark or another stable national currency.
They also propose to deregulate cryptocurrencies and reduce environmental restrictions, arguing that the Paris Agreement responds more to political interests than to science.
European context and potential impact
These proposals come at a time of political crisis in Germany, after the dissolution of the government coalition led by Olaf Scholz. Although the departure of a member as influential as Germany seems unlikely in the short term, the AfD’s proposals could create tensions within the EU, just as Andorra is making progress in its partial integration.
The Association Agreement, which Andorra is negotiating with the EU, seeks a balanced economic and social collaboration, with progressive access to the European internal market, respecting its sovereignty and dimensions. Anti-EU stances, such as AfD’s, could influence the European debate and perceptions of the benefits of belonging to supranational structures.
