The old man and the sea

The old man and the sea

No matter how many times we have faced a challenge, we always have to face the one that arrives as a new one. The experience is a worthbut each life situation requires its own effort. This is one of the great lessons that a novel from the 1950s written by the Nobel Prize winner left me, Ernest Hemingway. In The old man and the seashows us how an experienced Cuban fisherman throws himself into the sea like every day to carry out his work. After 84 days without bringing anything in his boat, he returns to the water and there a situation takes place where a man who fights against nature ends up leaving behind many teachings for life.

It is one of those short texts that liven up an afternoon, but that I recommend everyone read. Not only because the classics You have to revisit them from time to time, as many say. If not because when you immerse yourself in it it makes you think, and a lot because of the number of lessons that the American author manages to deploy. From patience, focusing on the present, not forgetting the modesty or even the care of the personal knowledge that each person should have. Many keys to a novel that already acted as therapy to heal wounds and achieve better mental health. In each era it was approached in a different way, and in the 19th and 20th centuries, writing took the cake. The Greeks and Romans also had their concerns and already realized how bad it was to fall into attacks of melancholiawhat we call today depression.

In times where everything is immediate, and there is no room for boredom or creativityit is good to dive into the high seas where those who know this trade can predict atmospheric phenomena before they reach land by pure observation. A place where each hour can be eternal, but can also be charged with emotion because of what that respectful mantle of salt water brings. A space to learn a multitude of things away from the world around us. It is difficult to regret a reading like the one brought by the adventure of Santiago, who in Hemingway’s novel is called “the old man“.
