Former police officers Ronnie Lessa and Élcio Queirozconfessed murderers of Rio de Janeiro councilor Marielle Franco and her driver Anderson Gomes, were sentenced this Thursday to 78 years and nine months, and 59 years and eight months in prisonrespectively.
A jury found the former police officers guilty of the double homicide that occurred in 2018 and that shook Brazilian politics, after which the judge set the prison sentence.
Furthermore, the murderers were ordered pay a pension to Gomes’ son until he turns 24 and compensate each of the victims’ relatives with 706,000 reais (about $120,000) for moral damages.
“Justice is sometimes slow, blind, clumsy, but it reaches even those accused who believe they will never be caught,” said the judge.
