And the same thing will happen to you, especially if you share our passion for medieval towns and castles. But also, on this trip to the past we have found a truly surprising town. It is located on the top of a hill, in the Marche region, and its resemblance to Granada is not only in the name, but also in its appearance. It is about Gradarathe town with a double walled ring, which when you have it in front of you will seem like the twin brother of our Alhambra.
It looks like Granada, but it’s in Italy
And it is precisely the impressive walls that surround this town, with the Adriatic Sea in the background, that make Gradara one of the most beautiful and charming towns in Italy. But in addition, this fortified town houses one of the most imposing castles in Italy and one of the most popular, since within its walls a tragic love story that appears in the Divine Comedy: that of Paolo and Francesca, two lovers of the town who made this construction famous, which is surrounded by an aura of mystery. Built between the 11th and 14th centuries, the Malatesta Fortress is not only famous for the verses of Dante Alighieri, but also for being one of the best preserved medieval structures in this country.
It is located on a hill 142 meters above sea level and one of the most notable elements is the mastio or main tower, from the year 1150. With its 30 meters high it dominates the entire valley.
A walk along the walls
Along with the castle, the double walls that surround the town are the other tourist point of this beautiful destination. And if the view of Gradara has impressed you because it reminds you of our Alhambra, you will also be fascinated by touring the wall area that surrounds the town from above. The walled section, known as the Ronda Walksis almost 800 meters long and is interspersed with 14 square towers. And best of all, the walk will allow you to enjoy a unique panorama of the Marche hills with views of the Adriatic Sea.
The religious heritage and the remains of San Clemente
There are two religious buildings that we recommend you not miss. One of them is the Church of San Giovanniwhich is located to the right of the castle. It dates back to the 14th century, a period from which the façade is preserved, while the interior was restored according to the architectural style of the 18th century. The other is the Church of the Blessed Sacrament which is near the clock tower and is where the remains of San Clemente are located.
