Teide registers more than 500 microearthquakes

Tenerife has recorded in recent days a seismic swarm of more than 500 earthquakes. In the early hours of last Thursday, between 4:00 and 7:20, the Canary Island recorded half a thousand earthquakes at a depth of between 8 and 12 kilometersso national and international experts are already observing this phenomenon in detail.

The event began with up to a dozen tremors with a magnitude of 1.1 on the Richter scale, according to reports eltiempo.es. Next, several long-lasting signals with high frequency content occurred. However, these events are part of a sequence that is being observed, and that is cataloged under the concept of ‘drum ring’according to the National Geographic Institute (IGN).

Given this situation, the question arises as to whether Teide could erupt again. Although its last explosion took place in 1798, This type of activity is commonand Tenerife “is a volcanically active island”, as geologist Nahum Méndez explains to the aforementioned source.

Despite these circumstances, “for the moment “There is no reason to be alarmed”. However, Méndez urges to continue investigating and consulting experts regarding possible risks that may arise: “Not considered a significant threat in the short term.”

This expert also remembers that the Tenerife island has experienced at least 118 seismic swarms since 2017. Of these, many are related to the pressurization of the volcanic-hydrothermal system as part of the injection of magmatic fluids into the subsoil.
