Stephen Kenny insists the vacant Republic of Ireland position is a better job now than when he took it

STEPHEN KENNY believes the vacant Ireland position is a better job now than when he took it.

The FAI have yet to appoint a replacement for Kenny who they parted company with 178 days ago as John O’Shea has, again, being installed as interim manager.

Kenny, 52, said he has no contact with anyone involved in the search for his replacement and has no knowledge of the reasons behind the delay.

But he believes that it is an enticing job for anyone, as he pointed to the young players blooded during his reign.

Kenny said: “It’s a really good job for someone now, it’s a different job, you’ve got a lot of really talented goalkeepers, centre backs, and attacking players.

“For three years, we’d a lot of really good performances in that time, and some defeats, it was a transition period for Ireland.

“We’d a lot of matches, we didn’t win enough of them and I think I never complained about not having my contract renewed, that’s part of life.

TOP JOB

“We gave 21 players their competitive debut in that time, I think it’s a really good job now.

“It’s a different job than I inherited where a lot of players were at the other end of their career and some players retired in that period

“When I took over and Dave McGoldrick retires, a lot of the real attacking players are in League One and League Two now from that era.

“Now you’ve got Chiedozie (Ogbene) and Evan (Ferguson) and Adam Idah and Mikey Johnston.

“These are a new batch of players who have come through, and other players Michael Obafemi shone brightly for a period and he’s had his injuries.

“Players of that ilk have come through. There are  good options for the new manager I feel.”
