More than 30% of salary to live in a room

More than 30% of salary to live in a room

Andorra la VellaThe latest Andorra Research+Innovation Observatory reports that the majority of respondents spend between 30% and 49% of their household income to pay for housing. 18% of people who pay rent say they spend more than 50% of their income on it. This means that two out of ten people are paying more than half of the salaries of the family unit (which can be a single person if they do not live as a couple) to cover the rent. 11% of those paying a mortgage are also contributing more than 50% of their income.

Another important fact is that 77% of those who live in a room in a shared apartment spend between 30 and 50% of their salary to pay the rent. It must be remembered that 30% of income is the maximum threshold set by the United Nations for it to be affordable.

Vulnerable groups

The Observatory has detected the most vulnerable groups, among which the increase in elderly people who are renting stands out. Joan Micó, coordinator of the Sociology area of Andorra Research+Innovation explained that “people in a single-parent situation, is a risk group. Newcomers to the country, with the base salary or very close to it. People who are separating and have to look for a flat, who in some cases have to stay with their partner because they can’t”.
