Leeds United closing in on four-year agreement for Javi Gracia’s first signing after player stance emerges

Leeds United look to be closing in on the signing of Barcelona youngster Ilias Akhomach, with the player seemingly willing to take a step down to the Championship if Leeds are relegated.

It’s very obvious that the pool of players Leeds will be able to invest in shifts drastically if the club face relegation from the Premier League in the coming months.

Youth signings for the future might also have to take a different route, given that Leeds wouldn’t be able to offer a clear route to Premier League football too.

Who has been linked?

Barcelona winger Ilias Akhomach looks to be close to agreeing a contract to join Leeds at the end of the season, when his current deal with the La Liga giants expires.

Mundo Deportivo reported that the winger will leave Barcelona when his contract is up, and Leeds are the side that look to have won the race.

The report also names Akhomach as one of the most talented players currently plying his trade in the Catalan giants’ youth ranks, having made his debut under Xavi midway through last season.

Does Akhomach want to join?

Such reports did claim that Akhomach wants to join a top-flight side, which poses a threat to Leeds’ negotiations here, given that Javi Gracia’s side sit 19th in the table.

However, LUFCFanZone are now claiming that the player would be open to dropping into the Championship as a move to Leeds nears.

Akhomach looks like a very shrewd deal for Leeds to be bringing in this summer, no matter whether we stay up or go down.

If we do go down, you’d expect him to be pushing for a first-team spot quite quickly, and he’d look to take the Championship by storm.

A four-year contract suggests to me that he might see Leeds as a stepping stone, which is fine, but hopefully he does join and hit the ground running to showcase his talents.

Quiz: Can you remember Leeds United’s last 15 results v Wolves ahead of Molineux trip?
