Joan Manuel Serrat wanted to address the issue of criticism received for singing in Spanish and Catalan. In an interview on TV3, the artist was reminded that there are many people who have questioned him for singing in both languages, something to which he responded.
“I have been criticized for singing in Spanish from Catalonia and I have been criticized from Castile for singing in Catalan. I I have received from both sides“, the musician began by saying.
“But that’s a question… basically the problem is with the intolerant“I don’t have it,” said Serrat.
“I am Catalan and I feel deeply Catalan. My thoughts, whether personal, social, or political, have never been separated from the concept of Catalonia,” he clarified.
“It’s your country, it’s your people“, the interviewer stressed. “In my country there are also people in certain places who want to hang the Moors, eh? I mean, that’s your country too. Don’t know, my country is very complex. The country is not unitary in thought, nor is it unique in its dreams, not even in its reading of history. A country is very complicated,” the artist insisted.
