Andorra la VellaThe board of FC Andorra renounces to build a new stadium in the country, since due to the country’s infrastructure and growth capabilities, it is “unfeasible”, as they qualified during the club’s Christmas breakfast, where a global review of the year. “There is a lack of consistency. The Borda Mateu project was not broken because of money, but because, due to questions from the owner of the land, he said that he agreed on some things, others not, and he broke the agreement” specified the president of FC Andorra, Ferran Vilaseca. So, when asked where the club should play during the 2025-26 season, Vilaseca mentioned that, in his own opinion, it should remain at the National Stadium. “We need some facilities to be able to feel at home, but being realistic, Andorra does not need another stadium, but to improve the current ones” said Jaume Nogués, the club’s sporting director.
So, the board of the tricolor entity has already given up the project to be able to create a new stadium from scratch in Andorra, although they have reaffirmed that they do not want to move. “We want to continue here” they asserted again. In fact, Nogués has remarked that being able to have a “house” is also a competitive advantage over fixtures. “Jaume (Nogués) was forced to train on natural grass, when we had artificial grass, and we ended up getting it,” recalled Vilaseca, mentioning that these are actions that mark them as a club and keep them moving forward. The main option remains the new stadium of the Andorran Football Federation (FAF) in Encamp, with whom they will have a meeting to finish discussing some issues after the Christmas holidays. “We have a good relationship with them and they are building a very good stadium. If, finally, we have to play there, we will be fine. Now we are waiting to see what their requirements are,” revealed the president.
With everything, and with the possible arrival in the ‘Play-offs’ and subsequent promotion to the Hypermotion league, the club’s management also continues to look for other alternatives to be able to have its stadium, even if it is not for total construction.
A delicate moment in the classification
“If we got to play in the First Division, we could stay in the category.” These were the words of the president during the review in 2024 and other issues such as the current situation of the team in the 1st RFEF. In this sense, both Vilaseca and Nogués have declared that, despite not being at their best, there is still no alarm at the club because “we are one step away from promotion”. “Our goal is to reach the ‘Play-offs’ and return to the Second Division. The desire is to return to professional football” asserted Nogués, stressing that, despite being a team of these categories, according to the structure and mass social club, “if we play in Primera, we could stay”, declared the president, regarding the football field.
The latest results are not supporting a team that, although it is difficult to enter the games, ends up being on the field. A double-edged sword that is not favoring Ferran Costa’s team this year. “We’re on a roller coaster” qualified Nogués, referring to the last two days, where they beat Osasuna ‘B’ 7-2 at Nacional and, last weekend, they lost 3-0 against Celta de Vigo ‘B’ in BalaÃdos. “2024 has not been the best year, but we have a goal and we are only thinking about fulfilling it,” Vilaseca pointed out. That the goal of the tricolors is to return to professional football is no mystery. However, it seems that the coach of Castelldefels has not quite found his identity on the bench. “We always have conversations with him and we are finding a fit for everyone. But it must be taken into account that the category in which he trained at Badalona Futur last year, the last matches of the category in which he trained in Andorra in the end of the season and the current season are very different,” remarked Nogués.
Of course, it has also been noted that the intention is not to “lose identity”. “The results will come, but when you lose your identity, you lose everything,” declared Vilaseca.
The winter market, close to opening
In addition, it has also been asked for the opinion of the current squad and its performance during the first round of the calendar. Nogués has emphasized that the board is not happy with the results, rather than with the players. “Humbly, the team is not where we think it can be. We have enough resources to reach the promotion” he confirmed. In fact, the club must reach a minimum and a level for all the infrastructure they provide.
As mentioned, FC Andorra could be looking at adding a full-back, a midfielder and a centre-forward during the winter transfer window. Asked about this possibility, the president and the sports director have stated that, at the moment, they are not looking for any reinforcements, but they are not closing in on anything. “We don’t foresee any exit” concluded Nogués.
