Biden takes his campaign to TikTok with a nod to the Super Bowl

Joe Biden has gone on TikTok in an attempt to connect with young voters in the United States. After weeks in which his collaborators had hinted that he would join the platform, his campaign hit the button on his first video during the Super Bowl, Sunday night.

In the video posted on the @bidenhq account, the 81-year-old Democratic president, dressed in khaki pants and a blue zip-up sweater, lends himself to a question and answer session that mixes sport and politics.

The questions came from Rob Flaherty, deputy campaign manager, according to the New York Times. “The President’s debut on TikTok last night – with over 6 million views and counting – is proof positive of both our commitment and our success in finding new ways and innovative ways to reach voters,” Flaherty said.

With another TikTok post this Monday, the campaign outlined the types of themes it plans to highlight throughout the year, sharing a short compilation of clips of former president Donald Trump boasting about his role in overturning Roe v. Wade.

The movement to reach young people also carries a degree of risk: TikTok is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance and is prohibited on government devices in most states and at the federal level.

Republicans, but also Democrats and national security experts, have expressed their concern about the control that China’s authoritarian government could exercise over the platform’s data and the content shown to Americans.

The Biden campaign has said it is taking “advanced safety precautions around our devices and incorporating a sophisticated security protocol to guarantee security.”
