A majority-Hispanic city in Florida begins the process to name an avenue after President Donald Trump

The Florida city of Hialeahneighboring Miami, wants Miami-Dade County support in a vote that a well-known avenue in this city with a large Cuban-American population named after president-elect Donald Trump.

The commissioners (councillors) of Hialeah, a Republican stronghold with a Hispanic majorityhad voted in November 2023 in favor of this initiative that wants designate the former Palm Avenue as President Donald J. Trump Avenue.

The request addressed to Miami-Dade is included in the agenda that the county commission will address on December 3, a request that would force Democrats to position themselves for or against, the newspaper reported this Monday. The Miami Herald.

However, the Hialeah Historic Preservation Board had then recommended not changing the name of the aforementioned public road.

Overwhelming support for Trump

“I think our community clearly has overwhelming support for him (Trump) based on the results of this past November (the presidential election),” said the sponsor of the initiative, Miami-Dade Republican Commissioner Kevin Cabrera.

The mayor of the aforementioned city, Esteban Bovo, indicated that they do not plan to eliminate Palm Avenue from the city’s geography and that the part already called ‘Veterans Way’ would not be renamed in tribute to Trump.

It would apparently involve the Trump Avenue plates being incorporated into existing sections.

Designate streets named after presidents or political figures It’s not something new in Miami-Dade. In 2016, the county commission approved a request by the city of Miami Gardens to recognize part of the city’s Northwest 185th Terrace as President Barack and Michelle Obama Boulevard.

While renaming county-maintained roads after living federal officials requires a two-thirds vote, approving a request for a city-maintained road or street only needs majority support on the county commission, explained the aforementioned South Florida newspaper.

If the vote is divided into partisan groups, Republicans would need a Democrat to support Trump Avenue for the initiative to prosper.

Democrats hold seven of the 13 commission seats, although Trump won 10 of the commission districts in November on his way to an overall victory in Miami-Dade.

Located in Miami-Dade County, as of the 2023 Census Hialeah had a population of 221,300 inhabitants and a 2020 population density of 10,338 people per square mile (2.5 square kilometers), making it the eighth most populous city in Florida.
