Cariño, the group formed by Paola Rivero on guitar, María Talaverano as vocalist and keyboard and Alicia Ros as vocalist and bass, He is one of the most influential in the current pop-indie scene.. Since they began their journey in 2017, they have released two studio albums, Moves and Dear with those who have not stopped achieving success.
After finishing his tour of Spain at the beginning of the year, the trio decided to stop to be able to work fully on their new album, So much to do. A more mature work that maintains the essence of the group with which the group shows that it is already more than established.
They release an album again after almost two years. How do you face this new stage?Well, we really want to, we face it with enthusiasm, with enthusiasm, but above all calmer, calmer. We are quite intrigued to know if people are going to like it or not, although hey, that doesn’t matter. I mean, it matters to us, it always matters, but not so much this time because we made this album for ourselves. It is therapeutic, a group therapy.
That’s also kind of the style that all your songs have, right? We are contrast. There is everything, obviously, but generally we want them to be songs about us and the band instead of feeling it from love and emotional relationships. Before our contrast was in music, with super happy melodies and super sad lyrics. Now we have tried to unify both parts. It is something we are not used to, but thanks to the producers, Luis La Madrid and Lucas Solovera, we have left our comfort zone. They have helped us a lot and we think we have reached a very cool point.
On the third album an evolution can be seen. Do you still maintain the essence of your first work? Before in the songs we were more toxic. The first songs speak of a much more intense love, more adolescent, so to speak. Everything is very frenetic and intense. Today, as we have grown and are at another vital point, it is one more love in reference to care. I feel like we’ve learned a lot about what’s right and what’s wrong in a relationship. We continue learning.
The first single of the album is titled nothing matters so much. Do you care much about how people will react to this new song? That’s exactly the motto of the album. It doesn’t title itself, but it could. We are in a new stage in which we care a lot about our fans and what they think, but we also want to look out for ourselves, both individually and as a group. It’s a bit for mental health, that can’t be left aside. We’ve never cared too much about numbers, but we’re always happy when people like it. Although, the fundamental thing is that we like it and feel safe with it.
One of the most interesting points of the video clip is that they have made a casting looking for people to represent yourself, what is it like trying to find someone to represent yourself? It’s a dream. Sometimes some days you need to have a double to do things for you. We do not always meet our own expectations or standards. We based ourselves a little on the idea that we have never sought success, before it was just sending an audio to our friends, we never had pressure to succeed. Still, everything has been quite organic and we have been quite lucky. We have worked a lot, but since it was something we like, we didn’t really see it as such.
That’s why we want to separate ourselves a little from that idea of an artist who is idolized. Especially as women, there is a perfection that is too hard for us. We give everything on stage, but that does not mean that we are normal, introverted people. It is necessary to maintain that humility and honesty. We want to demystify the idea of being an unattainable dream with a wonderful life.
They say they are introverted, but they still talk about their feelings without problems in the songs and they have become anthems of a generation.I think part of it comes because we are natural. Shyness itself does not allow us to be any other way. And, in the end, we connected. Much more empathy is developed on the part of the audience with a person who you see has insecurities, who is human. At concerts we show ourselves as we are, because we can’t be more than that. There is a bit of a surrender, a relief of saying “I’m going to show myself as I am, and if they demand more from me, well, look, I can’t.”
All our songs are stories based on our realities. But it is not only honesty when it comes to telling stories, but also about facing them and presenting ourselves as a band. We are people, we are not any God or anything, we can err and make mistakes. We are normal people, well, very normal, no, but made of flesh and blood.
“We want to demystify the idea of being an unattainable dream with a wonderful life”
They also talk a lot about this new album being a bit of a constant journey. What is the creative process like?It has been somewhat difficult. We started meeting online and ended up in a house in the Sierra de Madrid to be able to compose the songs, although it was not until months later when we returned to the studio to record. We have changed the themes a lot, it has cost us a lot to give them a final shape.
We have had like five different trackings. In fact, we ended up having a layout album in quotes. There were many songs that ended up being discarded when reviewing the concept. Our producers have been a bit of our spiritual guides, they have guided us a lot.
And could those songs that have been discarded at some point come back out?We are looking at it because the truth is that, as always, we are very sad to have to leave those songs behind. In the end a lot of time passes and then we don’t like it anymore, although at that moment we did. We have an idea of doing something with all those discards, but in the long term.
The release of this job has coincided with the problems caused by DANA, how are you coping? What we have to do is try to help with our music, with charity concerts and with all the possibilities we have in our hands. We cannot forget, it is a responsibility we have. That’s why we think, what can we contribute? Music, in that sense, helps a lot to escape, it accompanies you and can calm you down. That’s what we also want with this album. If someone can listen to you and help you, great. This work is a rebirth, full of hope. We do not want to take advantage of this situation, but we would like this to be a support, a hug.
