Alarming reduction of the minor population in Europe

Alarming reduction of the minor population in Europe

Andorra la VellaThe latest Children’s Observatory presented this week warned of the low percentage of the underage population living in the country, 14.8% of the total. This is a figure that has been progressively reduced since 2010, when the proportion of this group in the total population was 19.4%.

Beyond the Andorran borders, the situation is not much better. An example is the average of the 27 countries of the European Union, which in 2022 stood at 18.1%. This proportion is also lower in countries such as Portugal (15.8%), Germany (16.7%), Malta (15.9%), Italy (15.6%) and Greece (16.7%). , while in Ireland (23.6%), France (21.3%), Sweden (21%) and Belgium (20%) the proportion of the underage population is above 20%.

And despite the negative figures for the Principality, this is not an isolated case. One fact that does surprise, however, is that there is no other country in Europe that has reduced its population index so considerably since 2012 than Andorra.

The closest case is that of Portugal, which twelve years ago had a rate of 18% and has ended up being reduced to the previously mentioned 15.8%. In the overall case of the EU, the data has been maintained over time, and is only five tenths below the 2012 record, and as for Spain, it also registers a drop of 0.7 tenths.
