The monthly analysis of the previous years, except for 2020 and 2021 and due to the pandemic, clearly shows that the floating population increases from June, with the maximum peak in August. After the decline during September and October, it increases again from December, remaining high until March of the following year, coinciding with the winter season.
During the third quarter of 2024, the floating population figures were around 1,450,000 people per month, above the values ​​of the same period in 2023, when they were over 1,400,000 people.
The seasonal population in the Principality during the third quarter of 2024 was 5,122,842 people, which is equivalent to an increase of 1.4% compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The concept of seasonal population includes tourists, hikers and temporary residents. It does not include the resident population. The annual full-time equivalent seasonal population (ETCA seasonal population) during the third quarter was 14,035 people, 16.2% of the resident population in September 2024.
The seasonal component fluctuates significantly throughout the year and, in general, records maximum values ​​in the first quarter, coinciding with the snow season, and during the third quarter, with summer. For the third quarter of 2024, the seasonal population average was above 1,700,000 people per month, while for the third quarter of 2023 the monthly average was slightly below this figure.
The equivalent population is a calculation that is carried out to estimate what would be the total annual resident population that would generate the need for resources required by residents plus non-residents who, at a given time of the year, visit the country (seasonal population and related population).
For the third quarter of 2024, the equivalent population is 98,647 people, 2.8% more than in the same quarter of the previous year.
If the data is analyzed on a monthly basis, it is generally observed that in the months of April and May, coinciding with the end of the snow season, the equivalent population reaches its annual minimum, approaching the maximum the estimated population. The next peak is reached in the month of August, coinciding with the summer vacation period. Finally, in the months of November and December, the equivalent population grows again, reflecting the beginning of the winter season. Following the trend of recent years, in the third quarter of 2024 and compared with the same previous periods, the equivalent population reaches the highest values ​​of the last five years, with a monthly average of 91,160 people.
