Study to implement a biomethanization plant in La Comella

Andorra la VellaThe Government has approved the carrying out of a study that will analyze in detail the technical-economic-environmental feasibility of a possible installation of a biomethanization plant. The project aims to continue improving waste management and promote the circular economy, as the energy produced at this plant could be used to power FEDA’s cogeneration plants, as well as promote the management of organic matter . The public tender has been awarded to the company Recuperación de Energía for a total amount of 60,121.99 euros.

It should be remembered that the circular economy law (LEC) and the national waste plan – horizon 2035 (PNR) establish as one of the basic objectives to increase the percentages of preparation for the reuse and recycling of waste. In this sense, and according to the analysis carried out in the PNR, one of the key fractions to achieve the recycling objectives is the management of the organic fraction.

Currently, the collection of this fraction, and in accordance with the objectives of the previous PNR, is 10% of the estimated generation potential and is exported for composting. The purpose of this study is to analyze the feasibility of implementing a biomethanization plant for the management of organic matter, selectively collected, and other biowaste that can be treated in this plant, which will allow the Government to take a decision on the feasibility of building this facility.

As explained this Wednesday by the minister’s spokesperson, Guillem Casal, the study is expected to be completed “by 2025” and the most ideal location, if the project finally becomes a reality, would be in the Comella area, together with where Ctrasa and the cogeneration plant are located. “It is interesting that the possible plant was located in that area to make it more efficient,” he explained.
