China challenges quantum computing again with 504-qubit chip

Quantum computing uses specialized technology, computer hardware and algorithms to solve complex problems that classical computers or supercomputers cannot solve quickly. In addition, quantum computers have thousands of CPU and GPU cores capable of executing complex calculations. However, although these devices can solve existential challenges in a matter of seconds, China has made a significant leap in quantum computing with the presentation of Tianyan-504a powerful 504-qubit quantum computer.

This milestone marks a national record in terms of the number of qubits in a superconducting quantum chip, it also supports the testing of QuantumCTek’s kilo-qubit measurement and control system. However, it is expected that the 504 qubit chip match the performance of leading international cloud-based quantum computing platforms.

But what is the main objective of this chip? The mission consists of advance the development of large-scale quantum computing measurement and control systemsinstead of achieving greater computational power or quantum supremacy, notes the newspaper Interesting Engineering.

Going forward, this quantum computer will be incorporated into the Tianyan cloud quantum computing platform and provide global access to users, therefore allowing researchers in various fields to work more efficiently and accelerate the practical use of quantum computing.

China has the first practical quantum computer

In January of last year, China became the third country to be able to deliver a practical quantum computerwith technology manufactured entirely in the Asian giant.

The device developed by Origin Quantum, named ’24-qubit Wuyuan’is based on superconducting chip technology and was delivered to an unknown user more than a year ago. Furthermore, thanks to this innovation, China joins the select group of countries with the capacity to deliver a quantum computer, after Canada, which sold its first model in 2011, and the United States, which did the same in 2019 with IBM.
