Tsunami alert in Northern California after magnitude 7 earthquake at sea

A magnitude 7 earthquake has shaken this Thursday the north of California in Humboldt County and a tsunami warning has been issued, reports the US Geological Survey. USA (USGS for its acronym in English).

The earthquake occurred at 10:44 a.m. (18:44 GMT) west of Ferndale, a small city in the coastal county of Humboldt, near the Oregon borderaccording to the United States Geological Survey. This shock was followed three minutes later by a magnitude 5.8 aftershock 9 kilometers from Cobbin northern California, and three others of 3.3; 3.7 and 4.2 respectively, according to USGS data.

He tremor has been felt even in San Franciscoto the south, where residents have noted undulating motion for several seconds, followed by smaller aftershocks. Additionally, the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District, known as BART, has stopped traffic in all directions through the undersea tunnel between San Francisco and Oakland.

So far, no damage or victims have been reported and the alert has been issued from Davenport, in Santa Cruz County, to the border with Oregon. It also includes the San Francisco Bay.

At least 5.3 million people in California are under alert tsunami after the earthquake, the Geological Survey of USA in a yellow alert, which predicts localized but minimal damage and in which they do not rule out having to evacuate. More than 1.3 million people live close enough to the earthquake to have felt it, the USGS has estimated.
