Children with cerebral palsy are left without early care before the age of 5: “It is offered with limitations”

The Spanish Confederation of Associations for Care of People with Disabilities Cerebral Palsy (Aspace Confederation) warned this Wednesday that the age of referral to other services or completion of Early Care in boys and girls with cerebral palsy and/or great support needs is an average of 4.94 years.

For this reason, it is considered necessary to “prioritize immediate access” of minors with cerebral palsy to Early Care and child development support services Aspace, increasing the number of specialized sessions that they receive.

This is one of the most significant data of the ‘Study on the situation of the Early Care network and support for child development in boys and girls with cerebral palsy and/or great support needs’ prepared by a group of Early Care experts from Aspace entities, in collaboration with the Gmp Foundation, and which was presented in Madrid.

This data reflects once again that early detection remains poorly specialized and disconnected from Early Care in children with cerebral palsy and/or great support needs. As pointed out by the Aspace Confederation, lack of coordination intersectoral between Early Care services, educational centers, health, social services, as well as other services that support minors and their families.

The welcome event for the presentation included the participation of the Gmp Foundation project manager, Nekane Orella; and the president of the Aspace Confederation, Manuela Murowho, taking into account the figures obtained by the study, regretted that in Spain “Early Care It is offered with many limitationsand specifically with respect to cerebral palsy.” From Confederación Aspace they defend a Early Care “free, universal, multidisciplinary and transversal for all the people who need it.

Next, we proceeded to presentation of the Study on Early Care in minors with cerebral palsyin a space moderated by the person in charge of training and employment programs at Confederación Aspace and coordinator of the study, Julia García-Risco, who revealed that, due to the lack of state resources, almost half of the entities, 47.6% specifically, cannot, or can only partially, cover the needs Early Care for boys and girls in the entire age range between 0 and 6 years.

The presentation of the study also included a table of experiences and conclusions from professionals and families. Specifically, the Alter Civites consultants and researchers of the study, Nuria Bayarri and Meritxell Prat explained the methodology and presented the results of the study and recalled that the study shows that 90.5% of Aspace Early Care services are in urban areas.

Next, the experience table was formed by the director of the Early Care service of Aspace Bizkaia, Ainhize Ruiz, together with the mother of a minor user of the Early Care service of this same entity, Nerea Ojeda.
