10 Biggest Failures From Otherwise Legendary WrestleManias

The history of WrestleMania sees the best events getting remembered fondly for decades. WWE has made it clear that WrestleMania is the biggest night of the year and everyone is expected to deliver strong performances. The best events of this show get talked about today with fans comparing current and future moments to these tremendous memories.

Even though these nights are celebrated, that doesn’t mean that everything was perfect on the cards. There is usually at least a flaw or two associated with any great show. History has seen that also happening on the biggest stage. Each of the following legendary WrestleMania shows had these failures involved.

10 WrestleMania 10: Confusing Title Scenario

Bret Hart WWF Champion 1994 Cropped

Many fans view WrestleMania 10 as the first classic WWE show to take place in terms of the overall show and match quality. Bret Hart vs Owen Hart and Shawn Michaels vs Razor Ramon were arguably the two greatest WWE matches ever at that time with the wild timing of the same night. The show even ended strong with Bret beating Yokozuna to become the WWE Champion and face of the company.

However, that entire title picture was hard to follow. Yoko had to defend against both Lex Luger and Bret after they co-won the Royal Rumble. Bret had to wrestle his other match against Owen to make it fair despite the triple threat option being used common today.

9 WrestleMania 23: All-Time Bad Kane Vs Khali Match

Khali v Kane WrestleMania 23 Cropped

WrestleMania 23 drew huge buy rates for the attractions of the Battle of the Billionaires, Undertaker’s undefeated streak vs Batista’s World Championship run, and a Shawn Michaels vs John Cena main event. The card is quite deep with cool moments like the MITB ladder match and an ECW new vs old school bout.

However, there was one glaring error going into the show, during the show and years later today. Kane vs The Great Khali was added to the undercard for a giant vs giant match. Unfortunately, it was a huge disaster and one of the worst matches in WM history.

8 WrestleMania 31: No All-Time Great Matches

John Cena Vs Rusev WrestleMania 31

Most of the best WrestleMania events have at least one or two classic matches to stand the test of time. WrestleMania 31 is a rare different kind of show with almost every match delivering but none having that all-time great legacy.

Roman Reigns vs Brock Lesnar was a strong main event, but it is remembered for the final seconds of Seth Rollins cashing in Money in the Bank. Other noteworthy matches like Triple H vs Sting, Randy Orton vs Rollins and the opening ladder match made it a fun show, but each fell short of being historic.

7 WrestleMania 24: Pointless Raw Vs Smackdown Match

Umaga puts a nerve hold on Batista

The variety of the talent and stories involved in WrestleMania 24 is what makes that card special historically. Edge vs The Undertaker and Randy Orton vs John Cena vs Triple H were both star-studded world title matches for the event.

WWE benefited immensely from the attraction matches of Ric Flair’s retirement bout vs Shawn Michaels and celebrity boxer Floyd Mayweather knocking out Big Show. The one huge flaw on the card was a Raw vs Smackdown match of Batista beating Umaga with minimal crowd investment.

6 WrestleMania 22: Poor Use Of Undertaker’s Streak

The Undertaker v Mark Henry WrestleMania 22 Cropped

WWE booked a strong card for WrestleMania 22 with noteworthy names all over the card. Triple H vs John Cena and Rey Mysterio vs Randy Orton vs Kurt Angle were strong world title matches. Shawn Michaels vs Vince McMahon and Edge vs Mick Foley added great hardcore attraction bouts for depth.

The biggest mistake WWE made for this event was having The Undertaker face Mark Henry in a casket match. Undertaker was coming off a superb world title program with Angle and had his undefeated WM streak as a huge part of the event. WWE unfortunately booked Undertaker in a pointless match everyone knew the results to.

5 WrestleMania 17: Women’s Squash Match

Ivory v Chyna Women's Championship WrestleMania 17

Most fans name WrestleMania 17 as the greatest WWE show of all time with hit after hit. Steve Austin vs The Rock, Triple H vs The Undertaker, the infamous TLC match, the battle of the McMahon’s and even a technical wrestling match of Kurt Angle vs Chris Benoit showed WWE’s superb depth.

The entire night made WWE feel like the peak of any wrestling promotion ever with such a historic event. Only one flaw exists on the card with the Women’s Championship of Chyna beating Ivory. The two-minute squash match could have been more effective with more time given the talent involved.

4 WrestleMania 21: Main Events Didn’t Deliver

John Cena v JBL WrestleMania 21 Cropped

WWE is currently using the same tagline of “WrestleMania Goes Hollywood” for WrestleMania 39 like they did back for WrestleMania 21. The show had arguably the best start to any WM with the first few hours featuring outstanding matches.

Eddie Guerrero vs Rey Mysterio, The Undertaker vs Randy Orton, the first MITB match, and of course the legendary Shawn Michaels vs Kurt Angle made it an instant classic. Unfortunately, the two world title matches failed to live up to that hype. The rivalries of John Cena vs JBL and Triple H vs Batista each featured better rematches after WM than they had on this night.

3 WrestleMania 20: Goldberg & Brock Lesnar Stinking It Up

Brock Lesnar Vs Goldberg WrestleMania 20 Cropped

The final time WrestleMania took place at Madison Square Garden came in 2004 with WrestleMania 20. Fans loved this show at the time for the epic double main event of Chris Benoit vs Shawn Michaels vs Triple H and Eddie Guerrero vs Kurt Angle in the world title matches.

Story-based matches like The Undertaker returning as the Deadman to beat Kane or Trish Stratus betraying Chris Jericho for Christian added to the great night. The only huge regret was the dream match of Brock Lesnar vs Goldberg completely flopping with both an awful match and the crowd turning on them for leaving WWE after this night.

2 WrestleMania 30: Wasting The Shield

The New Age Outlaws & Kane v The Shield WrestleMania 30 Cropped

WrestleMania 30 was a cool night in WWE history for multiple iconic moments. The visual of Daniel Bryan winning the WWE Championship in the main event or the crowd being stunned at Brock Lesnar ending The Undertaker’s streak ensured this event will live forever in highlights.

WWE unfortunately made one huge mistake to take away from the otherwise historically successful night. The Shield was one of the top acts of the era and had a pointless squash match over the New Age Outlaws and Kane. This ended up being the final WM match of The Shield as a team that no one cared about.

1 WrestleMania 19: Triple H Burying Booker T

Triple H Vs. Booker T WrestleMania 19

The biggest threat to WrestleMania 17 in the all-time WM comparisons is WrestleMania 19. This event defined the Ruthless Aggression with some high stakes matches. WWE utilized their legends with the attraction matches of Hulk Hogan vs Vince McMahon and the final Steve Austin vs The Rock bout.

Other classics like Chris Jericho vs Shawn Michaels and the main event of Brock Lesnar vs Kurt Angle lived up to the hype. The one negative from that night that still gets talked about is Triple H beating Booker T to retain the World Championship and win their feud after weeks of offensive racial comments.
