(THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FOR WICKED)
It’s not easy to adapt a musical and come out victorious. However, Wicked, The film born from the successful play that has been conquering Broadway for two decades, has exceeded all expectations and, in addition to being a blockbuster, has won the pocket of specialized critics, who have crowned it as one of the best films of the year .
There are many people responsible for this good reception: its director, Jon M. Chu, that has honored the original musical without neglecting the audiovisual tools at its disposal; the protagonists Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, who have given themselves over to chemistry between Glinda and Elphaba; and secondary as Jonathan Bailey irresistible dancing to life like Fiyero.
Wicked It is only the first part of the musical and we will have to wait until November 25, 2025 to see its conclusion with the premiere of Wicked: Part 2. If this initial installment delves into Elphaba’s past at Shiz University and her unlikely friendship with Glinda, the second film will finally overlap with the plot of The Wizard of Oz, in which the protagonist becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.
The rest of the secondary characters will also play a fundamental role in the events that occur in The Wizard of Oz. Jonathan Bailey has precisely referred to a detail of his character that will make sense in the Part 2 and which you probably didn’t realize in this first film (not even Jeff Goldblum found out and plays the Wizard).
Jonathan Bailey explains Fiyero’s blue eyes
A few days ago, Jonathan Bailey shared a behind-the-scenes gallery of Wicked What we can see on these lines. In the third image, a video, we see the actor looking at the camera with his blue contact lenses to play Fiyero.
You may not have noticed the change in color in the actor’s eyes since there are no close-ups of him in the first film. However, the Brit has had to wear contact lenses for the role of Glinda’s love interest.
In an interview for Cinema Blend, Bailey has explained that, despite how uncomfortable it is to wear contact lenses on set, this decision is essential for the second film.
“I felt like I was in a greenhouse looking at Jeff Goldblum,” the actor has joked, referring to the hassle of wearing glasses: “It’s definitely a different experience. And it’s somewhat restrictive, but I think it’ll be worth it.”
It is then that he announced that, in the second film, this detail will make sense: “There’s a line in the duet… ‘You’ve got me seeing through different eyes.’ And that can tell you what happens later. There’s a reason.”
(SPOILERS BELOW FOR WICKED)
In the first bet, Fiyero starts a love relationship with Glinda, but it is evident that he has feelings for Elphaba, feelings that will become more palpable in the second production, when the character has to hunt down the Wicked Witch of the West.
The duet that the actor refers to in the interview is precisely the musical number of As Long As You’re Mine that Elphaba and Fiyero share, and the phrase Bailey alludes to is uttered by her character. The song takes place after Fiyero confesses to Elphaba and Glinda his feelings for the former, ends his relationship with the latter, and runs away with the green witch.
Furthermore, in the Part 2, which, as we said, will connect with the events of The Wizard of Oz, Elphaba will try to protect Fiyero with her magic and will end up turning him into the Scarecrow that accompanies Dorothy. On November 25, 2025, the conclusion of Wicked will hit theaters and we will finally be able to see all these iconic moments on screen.
