An investigation has revealed the presence of 19 substances associated with plastic in tampons and compresseswhich harm women’s health. They would cause reproductive disorders, diabetes or obesity.
These are the results of an analysis carried out by the Rezero foundation, which promotes a healthy society free of toxic waste, together with the Institute of Environmental Diagnosis and Water Studies (IDAEA-CSIC). In the research, ten samples of feminine intimate hygiene products of various brands sold in Spain.
Rezero demands “prohibiting the commercialization” of tampons and pads classified as harmful in order to prevent them from remaining on the market. They expect “strict regulation to avoid toxic substances” in products in direct contact with sensitive areas of the body.
The study, supported by the Department of Equality and Feminism of the Generalitat, has detected plasticizers, such as organophosphorus esters, compounds with possible carcinogenic, neurotoxic and endocrine disrupting effects. As essential devices in the lives of many people, the foundation demands political responsibility to implement measures to ensure safer menstrual products and respectful with the environment.
In this way, Rezero’s proposals consist of prohibiting toxic substances in devices of feminine hygienewhile demanding transparency in labeling with a mandatory list of product components so that consumers can make informed decisions. In addition, the foundation invites consumers to use reusable products, such as menstrual cups or cloth pads.
