More than 31 million people in Spain have discovered an easy and practical way to incorporate exercise into your daily routine: the phoning. This activity, which consists of walking while talking on the phonehas become a national phenomenon, especially during calls with friends and family.
According to a survey conducted by IO Research Group, 63.6% of Spaniards practice phonning, with 41% doing it consciously to stay active during your conversations. The popularity of phonning increases in spring and summerwhen the good weather invites you to go out for a walk while chatting.
Although running has gained followers in recent years, phonning already had a large base of practitioners. A study by the Finetwork operator reveals that Spanish phonners travel up to 181 kilometers a year while talking on the phone. Furthermore, 40% of those surveyed who have not yet practiced it are considering starting, which could add more than 7 million new phonners in the country.
Health benefits of phonning
Walking is a form of aerobic exercise which provides numerous benefits for physical and mental well-being. In addition to improving circulation and strengthening the heart, walking helps control weight, improve mood and reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes and the hypertension.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adults dedicate at least 150 minutes a week to walking, and can increase up to 300 minutes to obtain greater benefits. Katherine Zeratsky nutrition specialist at the Mayo Clinic, highlights that “Physical activity, such as walking, is crucial for weight control, since it helps burn calories. Adding 30 minutes of brisk walking to your daily routine could burn around 150 extra calories a day.”
However, the nutritionist emphasizes the importance of balance: “Excessive exercise may increase risk of paininjuries and exhaustion. If you are a beginner, it is advisable to start with short walks and gradually increase the duration or intensity.”
Teresa Rivera Finetwork spokesperson highlights: “Walking while we talk not only allows us to take care of our health in a natural way and almost without realizing it, but it also improves our mood and allows us to make better use of the time in our conversations.
How to incorporate phonning into your daily routine
Walking is a low-impact activity, ideal for people of all ages. On average, People take between 3,000 and 4,000 steps a day. Setting a goal of 10,000 steps a day is an achievable and beneficial goal for your health, without the need for special equipment or expensive gym memberships.
