The Government of the island state of Grenada, in the Caribbean Sea, this Friday denied claims that the island is one of the jurisdictions that the incoming US Administration of donald trump has identified to send migrant deportation flights.
According to a statement from Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell’s office, his Government “has not participated in any discussions regarding the deportation of migrants to Grenada.”
“In addition, no proposal has been presented on this matter,” indicates the note, which specifies that this clarification occurs in response to information that pointed to the island as a possible destination for the deportations of migrants promised by Trump.
Aside from Grenada, the other countries Trump’s team is reportedly considering for deporting migrants when their home countries refuse to accept them are Bahamasthe Turks and Caicos Islands and Panama.
This Thursday the Government of the Bahamas reported in an official statement that “this matter was presented to the Government of the Bahamas, but was reviewed and firmly rejected by the Prime Minister (Philip Davis).”
For its part, the Government of the Turks and Caicos Islands said that it opposes this idea of Trump’s, although it did not specify whether, as in the case of the Bahamas, it has received a proposal in this regard.
“We are steadfast in our commitment to protecting the interests of the Turks and Caicos Islands and upholding the integrity of our immigration system,” said Arlington Musgrove, Minister of Immigration and Border Services.
Musgrove said that will not allow foreign policies to undermine or dictate its national securityeven more so now that they are dealing with an increase in irregular migration from Haiti.
“The unilateral imposition of third-country deportation policies, such as those reportedly being considered by the incoming Trump administration, is at odds with international norms and legal standards,” he said.
Trump has promised to carry out the largest deportation of migrants in history of the United States once he assumes the presidency in January 2025.
